Frequently Asked Questions

What do systolic and diastolic mean?

Systolic (the top number) measures pressure when your heart beats. Diastolic (the bottom number) measures pressure between beats, when your heart rests.

What are the blood pressure categories?

Based on American Heart Association guidelines: Normal is under 120/80, Elevated is 120–129 systolic with diastolic under 80, Stage 1 is 130–139/80–89, Stage 2 is 140+/90+, and a Hypertensive Crisis is above 180/120, which requires immediate medical attention.

Is one high reading a cause for concern?

A single reading can be affected by many factors like stress, caffeine or activity. Consistent patterns over multiple readings, taken correctly, matter more than any one result — talk to your doctor if you're concerned.

How should I take a reading correctly?

The American Heart Association recommends: sit quietly for 5 minutes first, feet flat on the floor, arm supported at heart level, avoid caffeine/exercise/talking beforehand, and take at least 2 readings a minute apart, averaged. A correctly-sized cuff also matters — a too-small cuff can read artificially high.
