Frequently Asked Questions
What does waist-to-hip ratio measure?
It’s a simple measure of body fat distribution, calculated by dividing your waist circumference by your hip circumference. Higher ratios indicate more fat carried around the abdomen, which is associated with increased health risk.
What ratio is considered healthy?
Based on World Health Organization thresholds: for men, 0.90 or below is low risk, 0.91–0.99 is moderate risk, and 1.00 or above is high risk. For women, 0.80 or below is low risk, 0.81–0.84 is moderate risk, and 0.85 or above is high risk.
How do I measure correctly?
For waist, the World Health Organization's protocol is the midpoint between the bottom of your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone (iliac crest) — not the narrowest point or the belly button. Measure horizontally at the end of a normal breath out. For hips, measure at the widest point. Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin.
