Understand What Your HPV Test Can Tell You
The test looks for 14 high-risk HPV types associated with cervical cancer. It individually identifies HPV 16, 18, 31, 45, 51 and 52, and reports the remaining types in groups:
- HPV 33 / 58
- HPV 35 / 39 / 68
- HPV 56 / 59 / 66
Seeing an individually reported genotype gives you more detail than a result that only says whether high-risk HPV was detected. Your result still needs to be interpreted alongside your age, screening history and individual circumstances; it can help inform follow-up but does not diagnose cervical cancer.
An HPV test looks for the virus itself. It does not examine cervical cells for abnormal changes and does not diagnose cervical cancer.
Why High-Risk HPV Matters
HPV is a very common virus transmitted through close skin-to-skin contact, including sexual activity. Having HPV does not mean you have cancer, or that you will develop a health problem.
In most cases, the body's immune system clears HPV naturally. In some people, infection with certain high-risk types can persist and cause changes to cervical cells over time. This is why HPV testing forms an important part of cervical screening.1,2

The World Health Organization recognises HPV self-sampling as an additional screening option where HPV testing is available, and self-testing is being incorporated into cervical-screening pathways for eligible under-screened people in England.3,4 Research has also explored whether self-sampling can increase participation in cervical screening.7

Understanding Your HPV Results
Your report makes clear whether one of the high-risk HPV types covered by the test was detected. A result is a screening result, not a diagnosis; the next step depends on the genotype, your screening history and your personal circumstances.
- High-risk HPV not detected — The high-risk types covered by the test were not found in your sample. This is reassuring for this sample, but it is not a reason to stop screening. HPV can be acquired at different times in life, so continue screening according to the recommendations for your age and circumstances.1
- High-risk HPV detected — One or more of the covered high-risk types was found. This does not mean you have cervical cancer. Many infections clear naturally, but persistent high-risk HPV can lead to cervical-cell changes, so your result should be interpreted in context and the appropriate follow-up completed.1,2
- An individually reported type (HPV 16, 18, 31, 45, 51 or 52) — The report can name that genotype specifically. Different types may be managed differently within screening pathways, which can help inform follow-up.
- A grouped result — Some types are reported together rather than individually. A positive result in a group means HPV from that group was detected, without identifying the individual genotype.
- Invalid or unavailable result — Occasionally, a sample does not produce a usable result. If this happens, contact us or follow the instructions with your report; you may be advised to repeat the sample or use another screening route.
Depending on the genotype, your screening history and your circumstances, follow-up may include another cervical sample, repeat HPV testing later or further assessment.

Is an HPV test the same as a Pap test?
No. An HPV test looks for high-risk types of the virus; a Pap test looks at cervical cells for abnormal changes. In Singapore, Pap testing is generally recommended for women aged 25-29 who have ever had sexual activity, and HPV testing from age 30 onwards.1
Does a positive HPV result mean I have cervical cancer?
No. It means one of the high-risk types was detected in your sample. HPV is common and many infections clear naturally, a positive result is a screening result, not a cancer diagnosis. Depending on the type detected and your circumstances, further testing may be recommended.1,2
Can I use the test if I am 25-29?
Singapore's usual guidance recommends a Pap test rather than an HPV test at this age, as HPV infections are especially common and often clear naturally. If you are considering HPV testing outside the usual recommendation, speak with a qualified healthcare professional about the right approach for you.1
Do I still need screening if I have had the HPV vaccine?
Yes. Vaccination provides important protection but does not cover every HPV type associated with cervical cancer, so regular screening is still recommended.2
How long will my results take?
Typically 2-5 days after the laboratory receives your sample. Delivery and return-shipping time are separate from laboratory turnaround.
What if I have symptoms?
This is a screening test, not a way to investigate symptoms. If you have symptoms such as unusual vaginal bleeding, bleeding after sex, unusual discharge or persistent pelvic or lower-abdominal pain, arrange a medical assessment rather than relying on a home HPV test.2

The Camtech Health HPV Test Kit is a screening test for selected high-risk HPV genotypes. It is not a diagnostic test for cervical cancer, cervical precancer or other cervical conditions.
The test analyses a self-collected sample for the high-risk HPV types included in the assay. It does not examine the cervix or assess cervical cells for abnormal changes, so a positive result does not mean cervical cancer or abnormal cells are present. A negative result means the covered high-risk types were not detected in the submitted sample; it does not exclude every HPV type, does not guarantee that cervical-cell changes are absent and does not remove the need for future screening at the intervals recommended for you.
Screening tests are not 100% accurate, and an invalid, unavailable, false-positive or false-negative result is possible.
In Singapore, current national guidance generally recommends Pap testing for women aged 25-29 who have ever had sexual activity, and HPV testing for women aged 30 and above who have ever had sexual activity. Individual recommendations may differ according to medical history and circumstances.1
